Feedback please.

I really don't know how many people read this blog but I have a question and I would like some feedback of what you guys think and what the Lord has taught you. Ok, first some background. I have been reading in Exodus and through the specifications of the Tabernacle that the Lord gives to Moses. The Lord goes through all of these specs, gold on this and bronze on that and this garment is to look like this, and so forth. Anyway, after all of this is built and really to be used, Aaron and his sons are to be the priets and to make sacrifices to the Lord and to minister to Him. Now the last one is the one that I have a question about.
What does it mean to minister to the Lord? How is that different that serving Him, if it is at all?
From what I know, or think I know, I feel like ministering to the Lord is a part of prayer where we are listening to God and His concerns and heart on things. Now that may sound like that downgrades God to our level, but I do not mean it like that, and I do believe that our relationship with God consists of not only us being servants and children of God but also His friends. Not that He needs friends but wants them. And a friendship consists of a two-way relationship. Jesus was not only the Rabbi and John the disciple, but they were friends and hung out and shared there hearts, thoughts, and concerns.
Now is that what ministering to the Lord is, I have no idea, but that is where you guys and your experience come in. Please leave your thoughts.
May our relationship with Jesus become more and more intimate everyday. Thanks.

Check out Matthew 4:11. After Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, it says that angels came to "minister to Him." I wonder what they were doing. How did they minister to Him? I bet they met his physical needs (food and water), but I'd like to think also that they encouraged His heart. Maybe they reminded Him about who He was and what His purpose was, that His Father was for Him and not against Him. Granted, this was while Jesus was here on earth, when He had "needs" that He doesn't have now. I agree with you that there is a fine line here that we don't want to cross... that we should by no means think that we somehow are less needy than Jesus and that we can meet His needs... no way. BUT He did come in human flesh and was tempted, suffered... all of which, as Hebrews tells us, allows Him to empathize with us. There is a deeper intimacy, friendship, and understanding available because of these things.
When I think of ministering to the Lord, practically I think of... 1. telling Him what I think of Him. Vocalizing to Him, repeating back to Him, who He is, what He's done, what His character is, what I like about Him, why I need Him, etc.
2. asking about His heart, concerns, like you said jay. caring about what He wants or what grieves Him. I think weeping over something that concerns Him would minister to Him.
3. obeying Him, doing something for Jesus that He wants, whether I want to or not, putting Him first.
4. more ???

I am thinking about what ministers to me... when my husband compliments me and vocalizes what He likes about me, when He asks me what's on my heart, or when He does something with me that I want to do, even if he doesn't want to do it, all these things minister to me.

BUT I am sinful and broken and have many deep needs, that can be met by only Jesus, then by Jesus through people like my husband who minister to me. Jesus does not have needs that require Him to go outside of Himself to get them met. But how cool that through His incarnation He took on empathy and a relatedness to us that fosters a close and intimate friendship between us.

check out Isaiah 56:4-8 too; it lists "minister to Him" (v.6) among other things like "choose what pleases Him, hold fast His covenant, join themselves to the Lord, love the name of the Lord, be His servants..." are qualities of the ones who He will bring to His holy mountain and who He will make joyful in His house of prayer.

see luke 7:38, i think this is a great picture of ministering to the Lord.

also see mark 15:41, luke 22:43, john 15:15.

perhaps out of a ministry to the Lord flows the right kind of ministry to other people.

ok there are my thoughts which got longer than i intended. thanks for posting great stuff.

What Adrienne said.

Just kidding. I think she's right on. She put into words some of what I was thinking. I'll have to think more to see if I have anything original :-)

in acts it mentions ministering to the Lord in the context of prolonged prayer and fasting.

so perhaps while serving Him is an exterior expression of our love, ministering to Him is an interior expression? serving Him entails ministry, serving the Body, teaching His gospel, that sort of thing, while ministering to Him entails private sacrifice, intimate time of prayer.

i don't know if that's correct or not -- im sure it doesnt come close to grasping the full depth of it, in any case -- but its a thought.
